Daily Devotional Theme: What is the condition of your heart? Breakdown of The Sower + The Seed Parable.
Scripture: āListen then to what the parable of the sower means:Ā Ā When anyone hears the message about the kingdomĀ and does not understand it, the evil oneĀ comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.Ā The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy.Ā But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.Ā The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealthĀ choke the word, making it unfruitful.Ā But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.ā — Matthew 13:18-23

Have you been reflecting on the condition of your heart lately? While the Bible tells us that our hearts are deceitful, do we really take inventory of what our heart reflects on a daily basis to ensure that our spiritual disciplines like reading the Word remains planted on “good soil” above all else? In addition to renewing our minds so that we create the best foundational beliefs and are able to exude greater faith, it’s so important that we constantly check our hearts and uproot anything that could take deep root in a negative way.
In today’s devotional, we’ll delve into the basis of Jesus’ parable of the Sower and the Seed. This parable speaks volumes to not only the different conditions of the heart, but the fact that not everyone who attends Church, who says “Lord, Lord” or does things [preaches, miracles, signs, + wonders] is a true Believer. This is why we see a falling away in the Faith, deconstruction happening more and more, false teachings/prophecies, and a host of other things!
Didn’t realize that? Let’s break it down.
Jesus spoke about FOUR types of soil [aka hearts]:
ā ļøRoadside [where the birds were able to snatch it; feet trampled it] ā> The ones who have no foundation; adulterous generation in faith [looking for answers in many religions/practices], or totally in the world without God. Never able to be saved.
šŖØRock [where the crop would look luscious and grow to a great degree + then wither; due to the bed of rock underneath the good looking soil] ā> The Lukewarm ones who had shallow faith/love for the Lord; no roots or fruit but appeared āleafyā from afar.
š¾Weed-infested with thorns, thistles, etc. [where the crop would grow but would be later choked out by the thorns] ā> The ones who had a broken belief system/faulty foundation; old habits/ways that werenāt dealt with. Cared about the world + money too much so they chose ālifeās caresā over God.
š³Good soil [where the crop was able to germinate and grow and have fruit.]āā> The ones pure in heart + with great faith in the Lord; worked to renew their minds/hearts and be doers of the word + not just hearers. The farmer got a GREAT return from this soil; Extraordinary harvest/blessing!
The Takeaways from the Parable of The Sower + The Seed:
šDidnāt matter about the skill of the farmer or the method he used. The seed = the Word of God [unaltered].
šThe fruit springing up was based on the condition of the hearts of those who heard the Word; Therefore, it’s not the job of the “sower” [i.e. preacher, pastor, evangelist, etc.] to necessarily save souls in essenceāā it’s just their job to ācast the seedā; the hearer decides if it gets planted in good ground and watered by God depending on how they’ve prepared their own heart.
Like in the Parable, we have to ensure that our hearts are reflecting that of “good soil”, which requires that we live a life of repentance, submission, righteousness, and constant “dying to our flesh” a Believer. As we know, our salvation is based on Faith in Jesus and not our works—-however, proof of His resurrecting power and the Holy Spirt in us is through our works, which should be as a result of our love towards Him. Hence why Jesus said, “If you love me, you’ll keep my commandments” [John 14:15].
We must remember that this walk is a journey. One of great Faith and a kind of Faith that endures until the end—-despite hardships, persecution, suffering, whatever!
The greatest news? Jesus says that we shouldn’t be discouraged for He has already overcome the world! And as a Believer, we have the help, guidance, empowerment, and comfort of the Holy Spirit—-who will never forsake us or leave us.

REFLECTION ON TODAY’S DAILY DEVOTIONAL:
Take some time this week during Holy Week to ask yourself if youāve really been taking inventory of your heart on a daily basis? Have you been asking the Lord to search your heart and reveal any thing that is a hinderance to it being pure?
Secondly, reflect on all that Jesus did this week while He was on earth leading up to His crucifixion. Thank Him for His sacrifice while you were yet a sinner and be encouraged that He not only defeated death, but conquered hell, and covers you with His blood in place of every flaw, shortcoming, sin, or imperfection.
Let’s take inventory on whether we’re guarding our hearts above all else! Are you doing more scrolling on social media than spending time with the Lord? Are you allowing distractions to grab your attention as opposed to reading His Word? Are you harboring resentment, anger, judgement, or malice because of an offense from someone? Are you praying against an enemy instead of praying FOR them as Jesus said?
Heās waiting for you to come in full transparency, with aĀ broken + contrite heartā-ready to repent and take His hand. His love for you is far greater than you could ever imagine and that doesnāt change because of our mistakes.
Remain in Jesus. Let Him remain in you. Be fruitful. Be His disciple. Rest in His love.
God Bless.
